Most lists of "kid business ideas" have a dirty secret: they assume a parent will do about 80% of the work. The parent designs the marketing, manages the money, drives to the supplier, handles the customers, and basically runs a business with the kid as a mascot.
That's not entrepreneurship. That's a craft project with a price tag.
If the point is for your kid to actually learn — earning, planning, problem-solving, recovering from a flop — they need to do most of the work themselves. Here are eight ideas that make that possible, for kids ages seven through twelve.
What "low parent work" actually means
Before the list, the rule. A kid business is doing its job when:
- Your kid sourced or made the product themselves.
- Your kid set the price (with input, not instruction).
- Your kid handed the product to the customer.
- Your kid took the money and counted it.
You're allowed to drive, supervise, sign anything legal, and step in if safety is at stake. You're not allowed to do the part your kid is supposed to be learning.
The eight ideas
- Pet-portrait drawings.** Five-by-seven pencil sketches of neighbors' dogs and cats. Charge $5 to start. Pictures from a phone work fine. Your kid finds five customers in the family and friend network before going wider.
- Lemonade stand done well.** Yes, the cliché. But done well it teaches everything: pricing, inventory, location strategy, customer service, dealing with weather. Start with $10, charge $1 a cup, and let them pick the location.
- Homemade greeting cards.** Holidays, birthdays, get-well, "just because." Pack of five for $8. Best for kids who love drawing. Selling to grandma counts the first time, not after that.
- Plant care service.** Two dollars to water a neighbor's plants while they're on vacation. Three dollars if there's a cat involved. Builds a real customer relationship and recurring income.
- Custom phone wallpapers.** For kids 10+ who have basic digital art skills. $2 to $5 per design, $10 for a pack of three. (My favorite real-life example: an 11-year-old named Zoe who started here and grew her business carefully over six months.)
- Garage-sale-flip.** Find an undervalued thing at a garage sale or estate sale, clean it up, sell it for more on a family-supervised marketplace page. Best for kids who like the hunt.
- Birthday-party helper.** Twelve-year-olds can earn real money helping parents wrangle cake-time at little kids' parties. $15-25 an hour for two hours of game-running.
- Custom bookmarks or hair accessories.** Made from craft store materials at low cost, sold to friends and family for $2-4. Tiny margins, but a legitimate first taste of "buy supplies, make product, sell, count profit."
The starter rule: $10 budget, real customers
Whichever idea your kid picks, give them a $10 starting budget and a rule: the first five customers have to be real people who actually want the thing. (Family doesn't count after the first one. Family will buy anything once.)
That rule does the magic. It forces your kid to confront pricing, presentation, and the question of whether a real human will pay for what they're offering. The lessons happen in those first five real sales, not in any parent lecture.
If they fail to get five real sales? That's also a lesson, and a much more useful one than a fake success.
